Objectives
By the end of this session participants will have been:
- Introduced to key AI applications relevant to dental professionals, including diagnostics, treatment planning and patient management.
- Introduced to the dento-legal risks associated with AI use, including issues of accountability, data privacy, and informed consent.
- Provided with an understanding of the importance of maintaining clinical oversight when using AI as a clinical tool.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this session participants should be able to:
- Describe the specific ways AI is currently used in dentistry.
- Have an awareness of the legal and regulatory frameworks governing AI use, including understanding product liability, data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR), and professional body guidance.
- Address ethical challenges such as bias in AI algorithms and the potential for allegations of dishonesty.
- Understand the requirements for obtaining valid consent from patients, particularly when AI is involved in their diagnosis or treatment.
- Appreciate the potential future impact of AI on clinical practice and how to stay informed about developments in this rapidly evolving area.
