The aim of this session is to provide dental nurses with some training in the form of a presentation and hands on workshop to allow for them to feel a lot more confident when it comes to the ins and outs of dental handpieces. Also providing valuable information to hopefully extend the life of dental equipment and make life a lot easier when ordering equipment.
Objectives
By the end of this session participants will have been:
- Introduced to the principles of effective maintenance and care of dental handpieces and equipment.
- Guided on best practices for cleaning, lubrication, sterilisation and routine inspection procedures.
- Provided with practical strategies to ensure best performance and longevity of dental equipment.
- Supported in developing the knowledge and confidence needed to maintain equipment safely and efficiently.
- Made aware of the importance of proper maintenance in promoting patient safety and reducing costly repairs or downtime.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this session participants should be able to:
- Understand the different types of dental handpieces and their clinical purpose.
- Develop confidence in handling, preparing and checking handpieces before use.
- Apply correct decontamination, lubrication and sterilisation procedures.
- Recognise early warning signs of damage, wear, or contamination risk.
- Further discuss differences in dental handpieces and components to build confidence in ordering correct items.
