Vital Pulp Therapy: a paradigm shift in managing pulpitis

This lecture aims to provide clinicians with an understanding of the biological basis of vital pulp therapy, enabling clinicians to diagnose pulp disease and develop appropriate treatment plans for patients with deep carious lesions and exposed pulp tissues.

Objectives

By the end of this session participants will have been:

  1. Introduced to the principles and indications of vital pulp therapy.
  2. Introduced to materials used in vital pulp therapy.
  3. Provided with an overview of clinical techniques involved in vital pulp therapy.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this session participants should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate critical understanding of limitations of current diagnostic tests in assessing the dental pulp.
  2. Demonstrate critical understanding of the rationale for vital pulp therapies and their biological basis.
  3. Critically appraise the different types of vital pulp therapy, including indirect pulp capping, direct pulp capping, partial pulpotomy and complete pulpotomy. 
  4. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the impact of novel inflammatory biomarkers and compounds in irreversible pulpitis.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of therapeutic compounds used in vital pulp therapies.
  6. Demonstrate critical understanding of the follow up schedules and plan further intervention if needed.
